what\'s going on...
I think what’s in the news between yesterday and today about Chelsea tabling a new offer or Jose Maria del Nido rejecting two fresh offers from unknown/unidentified club(s) is an attempt by a section of the press to give legs to the Marca-originated story of yesterday. It is an attempt to give the impression that things are happening on the Alves front and that not only Chelsea are in the running. It is a well-worn path that cannot stand scrutiny.
(1) The Cicinho plus cash for Alves story has been on since Adam. The only definite thing supported by Madrid officially was that Cicinho would likely move to Roma if both clubs reach an agreement. Suddenly, that possibility evaporated on Sunday after the Super Cup, as the Roma delegation weren’t even entertained. Now, we are back to the same story, debunked by Cicinho himself, of the possibility of him moving to Sevilla (though, of late, the waters have been further muddied by the claim that he’s open to such a move). Well, I don’t know what the truth is; but what I said earlier, even at the time the Cicinho Roma move looked a done deal was that Madrid cannot afford to sell Cicinho now and that if he’s going to move at all, it’s to Roma. He rejected a move to Sevilla last year; nothing has convinced me yet he will accept it this time. I think the story is a rehash of a dead Madrid gambit good enough only for paper sales.
(2) The Cicinho plus cash for Robben story is a new angle being introduced to the issue. Even though we must expect Chelsea to be working on alternatives to Alves, I do not think Mourinho is keen on Cicinho as the competition he wants for Ferreira and/or Johnson or the kind of player he needs for his purpose. I also do not know whether Cicinho would be keen on London. I personally don’t know whether Madrid are still interested in Robben, considering the pair of Dutch players they picked up recently and considering reports that suggest Schuster’s now looking for an attacker. Even if they’re still interested, I do not think Chelsea are ready to sell them Robben (though they seem not to discourage their advances outright). Chelsea have reported Madrid to FIFA last year for their unwholesome advances to Robben; I don’t think they’ve forgiven Madrid enough to want to sell them the same player. Chelsea recognize that their problem with Robben is not football, but money-related. If Robben really wants to leave, he would have to put in a transfer request, something he wouldn’t do for the obvious financial reason, at least. Reading between the lines of the latest statement credited to Robben’s father and agent, it would seem he’s not very sure now of his son going to Madrid. If Robben does not put in a transfer request, I think we’ll keep him. I’ve kept saying long before now that the deal for Alves is no longer dependent on the sale of Robben.
(3) The statement about rejecting two new offers ascribed to Jose Maria del Nido is unlikely to be true because he’s already established a pattern when making such statements. They almost always first appear on his club’s website. Marca claims he’d said it, but nothing on Sevilla website about it, except his own statement on the Juande Ramos situation. Juande Ramos himself at a press conference today talked about the Daniel situation and that really is what should give us a better insight into what is going on.
(4) I do not think this period of international break would see much movement from either party for obvious reasons. The player is away on international duty and any deal would be dependent on him being injury-free on return. Until after the Brazil versus Algeria game in Montpellier tonight, no one would be making any move. In the meantime, I think the press is trying to fill the information gap with all sorts of rehashes masquerading as news.
Now, let’s consider the Juande Ramos comment on the Daniel situation, excerpted from Sevilla’s website:
http://www.sevillafc.es/_www/actualidad.ph...not&id=8763
He understands Daniel´s dilema
Juande also spoke about Alves´ situations: \"From day one I understood his desires. If someone offers you six times the amount of money that you are currently earning, of course you will accept it. My situation is different as I have different requirements and also the career of a manager is longer than a player´s, therefore I have more time to weigh up my options.
Juande justs wants closure on Alves´ future: \"It would be best for everyone if we reached some closure on this situation with Daniel. If he wishes to play he will play, but if psychologically he isn´t right to play then he won´t. I have to talk to him about it but the other day he played superbly against Real Madrid\".
What this comment tells me is that Alves is pretty decided where he wants to go and his coach knows, even if he didn’t mention names. Before the unsubstantiated ‘news’ today of one of his agents meeting Mijatovic, only one club has been mentioned in the context of reaching personal agreement with him and they’re Chelsea. This is what Alves himself has publicly admitted; this is what his agent, Geronimo Suarez has publicly admitted. Everyone knows Alves has reached an agreement with Chelsea and no other before now. We need not speculate about which club are offering him six times the amount of money he’s currently earning. Alves’s only choice is pretty clear. No dispute – Chelsea. He’s accepted Chelsea’s offer; the only thing remaining is for the clubs to agree. He’s also now revealed that unlike previous years, the player has no more time to weigh up other options. The deal has to be done now
Secondly, it would seem that Ramos has inadvertently revealed that the Sevilla people are now battle-weary. It would be best for everyone if they reach “some closure on the situation with Daniel”. This reveals that under the surface, there’s a lot of tension at Sevilla over this issue. The pressure is more on them to shift ground than for Chelsea, because (1) they have the unsettled player and (2) they have the singular responsibility of trying to explain to a player bought for just about £600,000 why whatever Chelsea are offering now isn’t profitable enough.
The question of whether or not Alves would play is otiose. Reading between the lines, the coach expects him to have left the club before he or Daniel would have to make that decision. Considering that the second leg of the CL qualifier would be about the time of the transfer window closing, playing him would be statement enough that they want to keep him. But, of course, the coach knows he’d have to do a huge psychological work on him to get him in the mood. And, if he’s not psychologically prepared, he simply won’t play.
I suspect that tomorrow and next are the decisive days in this affair. In the meantime, let’s see if Alves would be speaking in France about his future before or after the friendly with Algeria, whether or not Dunga picks him.
BTW: We all keep debating the price, but the fact of the matter is we cannot be sure of the figures being bandied about now.w
