No.408 Negotiation part 2
[Morena]
It's your turn.
Choose a card.
Page2
The negotiation game begins.
[Morena]
The "Purpose" card, huh? Why did you choose this one?
[Borksen]
Huh? Is casual chatting okay? In that case, I'll talk about various things too, but there's no punishment, right?
Page3
[Morena]
Sure.
Let's take this opportunity to get to know each other better.
[Borksen]
Hey, are there other members too?
About 50 people in total?
[Morena]
Hehe, nice try. They will never speak.
For your information there are others, but... no more questions. If you want to ask, use a card.
[Borksen]
Of course, I chose the "Purpose" card to use it as a basis for my decisions.
Well then, I won't answer any of your questions either.
[Morena]
Aww... that's a bit sad...
Alright, if you answer one of my questions, you can ask me one in return.
[Borksen]
Thanks.
Number of allies are fewer than 50...
She reacted quickly without her expression stiffening, so the number isn't quite close... It might be about half...
[Morena]
My "Purpose" is the destruction of the Kingdom of Kakin. Once that's achieved, I'm planning to push for the destruction of humanity.
For that, I need your power.
Page4
[Borksen]
Huh?
[Morena]
Huh?
[Borksen]
You didn’t explain enough at all.
If 100 is full understanding, then I'd say we're at about a 3 right now.
[Morena]
Oh... I see you're quite curious.
Should I start by talking about my background then?
Are you familiar with "Nisen mono?"
[Borksen]
Yes, you're referring to royalty who don't have the right to inherit the throne, like you.
[Morena]
The real Morena Prudor was indeed like that... but I’m not even royalty.
The true Morena is in my grave.
[Borksen]
Huh?
Then... who exactly are you?
[Morena]
"Carnival" and "Blasphemy." – do these clues help you understand?
[Borksen]
"Festival Orphans"… I see.
"Carnival"
The Kakin royal festival, held once every few years,
takes place in a randomly selected village.
The royal entourage visits incognito to host a "banquet."
All villagers chosen are then immediately divided into two groups: "those who serve" and "others."
"Blasphemy."
Any act that disrespects the royal family is strictly forbidden, and those who violate this will be sentenced to the death penalty.
Before the modern era, even direct speech from lower officials or commoners looking directly at the royal family were punishable by death. Even with the progress of democratization today, acts such as contraception, abortion, or genetic testing related to the royal family are considered acts of rebellion and disrespect toward the royal lineage, resulting in immediate execution.

[Morena]
Yes, while Nen abilities are indeed similar to psychic powers, anyone can learn them with the right training…
There are also abilities that can awaken Nen in people who haven't yet realized it.
My ability includes that as well.
So, you won’t need to undergo long, special training.
[Borksen]
I See.
So, could you tell me specifically what your ability is?
[Morena]
Yes,
My ability, to put it simply, is to grant powers to those who share the same "goal" as me and expand that circle.
I am the "parent," and the "children" are limited to 22.
When the children accumulate a certain amount of points, they can become parents themselves and create their own children.
This is my ability…Hehe
It’s kind of like a pyramid scheme, right?
I listen to each child's "goal" and, considering their characteristics, I assist and support their ability awakening.
[Borksen]
Clever...
The structure of the explanation is such that no matter whether I choose "goal" or "ability" first, I’d want to know the other.
If I had chosen "ability" first, she wouldn’t have explained any further from here...!
Honestly… we...
No, I...
I don't really care about missions, responsibilities, or national defense once Kakin is gone.
It’s uncomfortable and troubling to have our daily lives, which we thought would continue as usual, and the vague future ahead of us, suddenly disrupted by someone else’s grand ambition.
Oh
Each of them...?
Isn't the goal "Kakin's downfall"?
Page10
[Borksen]
By the time I was old enough to understand things, I was already in a military academy, taught that my mission was to protect the integrity of the nation. But honestly, I thought, "If no war breaks out until I die, that's good enough."
I was skilled enough to luckily make it into the advanced officer academy.
Listening to popular songs from enemy nations was a life-threatening act, but in high school classes, we were taught about the "outside world" as part of the curriculum, even if the information was a few months outdated.
A country with the world's lowest water management rate, yet somehow leading the world in the partial production of stratospheric artificial objects and information processing capacity...
In such a nation, I had planned to live a modest, uneventful life within a small range of roles, like a frontier military prep school instructor or a deputy director in the General Affairs Office of the Ministry of Defense—positions like fourth secretary or below.
...That's why all of this is incredibly troubling.
With Beyond's New Continent Declaration, the situation suddenly took a drastic turn for the worse.
And now, on top of that—Nen abilities and the extinction of humanity…!
[Morena]
"The downfall of Kakin” is merely my own “small goal."
What unites us in our larger purpose is "killing people"...!
Whether directly or indirectly, it doesn’t matter.
Each of us has different reasons, circumstances, targets, or numbers. Those are our individual "small goals"...
[Borsken]
I sympathize with your background, but...
Even if there were someone I wished would disappear from my life, I’ve never considered choosing "murder" as the means to achieve that.
It’s good to know that you’re being honest, and that I can’t sympathize with your "goal" at all...
Using that information, I’ll—
[Morena]
These Nen abilities are greatly influenced by each individual's personality and state of mind.
[Borsken]
I will do whatever it takes to avoid this chaos!!
Page11
[Borksen]
You mentioned that Nen abilities are strongly tied to a person's personality, right?
So, how do you know that my unawakened ability is important, when you barely know anything about me?
Are you hiding your true intentions behind rhetoric like "everyone is special,"
simply to make the person you're negotiating with believe that "I am special"? Could it be just a negotiation tactic?
[Morena]
You are a Specialist.
Nen abilities are broadly divided into six categories.
You belong to the very rare Specialist category within those.
I have an ally who is an Enhancer.
He has enhanced his sense of smell and gained the ability to "detect abilities."
Currently, his power has reached a level where he can distinguish even the faintest aura from an unawakened person.
Page12
[Morena]
And he is still searching the ship for unawakened Specialists like you.
I’ve done my own research, so there might be some margin of error, but I believe that Specialists are about one in every 3,000 people.
You should be able to understand what this means, right?
It’s true that Specialists are relatively rare abilities,
but on this ship, it wouldn’t be surprising if there were another 50 to 60 people with such abilities.
It would be ideal if we could find someone among them who shares the same "greater goal" as us.
At that point, it wouldn’t matter if it’s you or not.
In fact, he has already encountered several awakened Specialists.
One of them, he was especially excited about—apparently, he's a Floor Master of the Sky Arena, a well-known figure in the martial arts world.
The reason I said that the longer the negotiation drags on, the higher the risk for you, is because of that.
That’s all the explanation I have regarding the abilities.
[Borksen]
I'd like to hear more details about the Specialist category.
Especially, I’d like to know what kind of ability you would give me if you were to grant me one.
Page13
[Morena]
Hmm, that's a question closely tied to the "Yes?" and "No?" cards...
Let me first explain about the Specialist category.
To put it very simply, Specialists are incredibly versatile.
Other categories, like Transmuters, might struggle to learn abilities from other categories, such as Manipulators, due to practical limitations. But Specialists don’t have those kinds of restrictions.
If I had to mention a downside, it would be that Specialists sometimes don’t even realize their true potential and end up mastering another category, only to regret it later. That’s a common issue for those in the Specialist category.
So, if you're aware from the start that you're a Specialist, you can attempt high-difficulty techniques that require mastering multiple categories at a high level, or even abilities that don't belong to any category at all—truly unique, specialized powers.
By the way, I am also a user of a Specialist ability.
My ability, which makes acquiring Nen abilities and improving techniques point-based through becoming my ally, is a very unique and advanced hybrid technique—essentially a mix of all five other categories. It’s quite specialized and complex.
Naturally, I have specific requests for your ability, but I can’t share you just yet due to the card and its interaction.
Sorry about that.
If you specify the "Yes?" card, I will reveal what kind of ability I would want you to acquire should you choose to join the team.
This is less of a question about Nen abilities and more about the role you would be expected to fulfill once you become a part of the team.
Page14
[Morena]
Okay?
[Borksen]
Okay.
……No matter which card I draw from the remaining four, the number of choices will not change.
It seems that for any question other than Question A, she will answer to some extent even after the card is sent to the graveyard... It’s always beneficial to have more information about the opponent, but... the time risk she mentioned is also true... The decision of whether to drag out the game or not will come when the options are limited.
Page15
[Morena]
Oh... What a shame.
Has the decision been made that you won't join our team after the second card?"
[Bokusen( I dont know her English name)]
Her teammates are also disappointed... This further confirms that, at the very least, they haven't witnessed any cheating in the past...!
But optimism is not an option.
The real question is whether she ever had this negotiation game with someone who doesn't want to join her team...! If I’m the first, then those reaction is natural!"
Well, it can't be helped... I'll do my best until the end.
There is definitely a difference between 'No' and 'X'.
Don’t you want to know the difference?
[Borksen]
Yes
I'll follow your lead. With 'No?'card.
[Morena]
OK.
If the 'No?' card is left, I'll explain what happens next
Page16
[Morena]
The most important thing is the difference between the two, as I just mentioned.
'No' means you won't become our ally.
Whereas 'X' means the game itself becomes invalid.
'No' is considered a firm declaration of your intention, a rejection without turning back, a complete separation from us."
[Bokusen( I dont know her English name)]
So far, this is as expected... In the end, 'Yes' and 'No' are the same...
If it's a choice between 'Yes' and 'No', then 'Yes' is the only option... a kind of threatening moment meant to make you feel like there's no alternative…
[Morena]
…Basically, you and the people around you are seen as 'not part of our group.' To us, you're just part of the crowd... mere points to be used in order to achieve our 'purpose' and enhance our 'abilities.'"
I will no longer try to recruit you... however,
now that you've learned our secrets, we cannot simply let you leave without consequences.
[Borksen]
She’s saying that here, right?
In that case, it seems that the option for 'X' was never really in our hand to begin with.
The third trap...
The game itself is all a trap...!!
To make me say "Yes"...!!
Page17
[Morena]
If it were the "X" card, the situation where you learned our secret would be the same,
but we would consider the fact that you learned the secret—along with everything else—to be null and void.
This doesn't mean "erasing your memory," but rather that we trust you and will consider everything that happened here as if it never occurred. We will avoid any further contact with you as much as possible.
I won’t distort "everything as if it never happened" and, when we meet again, I won’t cheat by saying, "Nice to meet you, let’s play a game."
And, I will also make every effort to avoid involving the people around you.
Specifically, we will cross-reference the information we have obtained with the people you care about, share it with our group, and make every effort to avoid them.
Given the nature of our "goal," the most accurate expression would be "delaying them as much as possible," though.
[Borksen]
To save time, I'll ask directly.
There seems to be no benefit for you in the "X" card, and the risks are high! Even if you say "trust me," I can't trust you.
Could you explain the advantages on your side so that I can understand?
[Morena]
I'm glad you asked. I'll explain now,
but it will take a bit longer... The advantage on our side is that "the risk is high.”
Page18
[Borksen]
I see... a vow and a restriction... high risk, high reward.
[Morena]
In Nen abilities, this is a very important component.
If the negotiation fails after a serious showdown, it can't be helped.
Even if it involves great risks, I will accept it.
By preparing myself with this resolve and facing the game, my ability will grow stronger, allowing me to better support my allies.
The same applies to those who join our team.
By overcoming the risk that "if the last remaining card is 'No,' he dies," the bond and effectiveness will grow even stronger…!
...You're not very shaken
That's impressive.
I think it will get quite real when there are only two cards left, don't you?
Now, go ahead.
Page19
[Borksen]
With this,
the remaining cards are
'No (Death)' and 'R (Survival)'...!!
[Ship announcement]
