Adebayor has agreed terms with Milan Now it\'s a question of 40 million euros
MILAN, 5 June 2008 - Milan and Emmanuel Adebayor have agreed terms. The Rossoneri management and the Arsenal forward met and came to an agreement during recent days. However, this is just the start: Silvio Berlusconi has yet to agree to meet the 40 million euro asking price. The transfer, which is anything but a done deal, is a step towards Adriano Galliani, Ariedo Braida and Carlo Ancelotti\'s new Milan. Do their plans involve investing money in a top striker (as Berlusconi himself recently promised the fans), or will they stick with the current group of players with perhaps the odd low profile signing?
PRECEDENTS - At Milan they are confident that, in the end, Berlusconi will open the new chapter with a star signing. It was more or less the same story in the summer of 2002, with Nesta. In mid-August, during a Communion and Liberation meeting in Rimini, Berlusconi officially announced that he would not buy the defender because the asking price was too high: the player was signed just three days later. It is on this precedent that the Rossoneri management are pinning their hopes. Everything possible has already been done: the agreement with the player (and what a player!) is in place, which is already a major step. Now it comes down to Berlusconi\'s decision and then negotiations with the Arsenal management.
THE INVESTMENT - Adebayor is certainly at the top of Ancelotti\'s wish list: he has long been asking for a powerful centre-forward who is good in the air and capable of playing up front on his own. The manager has followed Adebayor\'s achievements throughout last season and was able to see him in action during Milan\'s two Champions League matches against the Gunners (the Togolese striker scored at the San Siro). Considering his age (24), the player would be an investment for the future; certainly more so than Drogba (30) or Eto\'o (27, but has suffered several leg injuries). If the deal were to go through Milan\'s forward line would need no further adjustments for several years: Pato is 18 years old, Kaka 26 and Adebayor 24. In short, Berlusconi should spend now to save in the future.
THE MEETING - In the meantime, there have been talks between Adriano Galliani and Peter Kenyon, Chelsea\'s Chief Executive. It was Galliani himself who mentioned it when speaking to the British broadcaster Sky Sports News: \"We had a chat with Mr Kenyon and talked about football matters in general. We still have a very good rapport with Stamford Bridge. Did we talk about Shevchenko, Drogba and Kaka? Yes, we did, but I can tell you for example that Kaka is absolutely not for sale. Just like Ancelotti, he will be with us next season.\" With regard to the manager, yesterday in London speculation was still rife that Chelsea were desperately trying to agree terms with Ancelotti, in spite of his official announcement (\"I\'m 150 per cent committed to Milan\") and the fact that it has never even crossed Galliani\'s mind to let his manager leave.
TEMPTATION - Ancelotti has far too many ties to Milan to even contemplate moving on. Real Madrid tried to tempt him away in 2006 through their then \'director of football\' Arrigo Sacchi. Ancelotti hesitated, tempted by the idea of working with his former mentor, but got cold feet when the time came to sign on the dotted line. A brief meeting with Berlusconi was all it took to consign the Spanish offer to history. |
