The PC gaming landscape has shifted in recent years, both in terms of technological advancements in graphics cards and gaming monitors and in the makeup of IGN's PC gaming staff and contributors. As a result, outside of some real stalwarts, our list of the best modern PC games is substantially different compared to years past.
To be clear, this list does not attempt to pick out the “best” or “most influential” PC games ever made. It’s also not a list of the most popular games out there, or a list that seeks to represent the top games of every genre. No, this is a list of 25 games that we, the IGN editors and contributors, collectively recommend the most, based on our tastes, and all from within the past 10 years.

IGN’s Top 100 games list encompasses the best of the best throughout history, spanning generations of consoles, PCs, handhelds, and more. Our list last saw a major update back in 2019, and since then, there have been several games released that deserved to be added. Just as importantly, we looked at the totality of the top 100 as it stood and asked ourselves a few key questions. This lead to some beloved games dropping off, and other games we previously missed being added.
Games in our top 100 have to measure up to a few key metrics: how great a game it was when it launched, how fun it is to still play today, and how much the game reflects the best in its class. While past versions of this list have put a big emphasis on a game’s impact and influence, we’ve essentially taken that out of the equation. Many games that left a mark and inspired future developers may not stand the test of time and be all that fun to play right now. Or, quite simply, they may have been surpassed by other games.
With all of that said, IGN’s list reflects the current staff’s 100 best games of all time - a collection of games that continue to captivate us with their stories, wow us with their revelatory approach to game design, and set the standards for the rest of the industry.
Role-playing games have a long and fascinating history. From its humble tabletop origins, the RPG has grown and evolved over the years into the most dominant and ambitious game genre, boasting a catalog as critically acclaimed as it is diverse. The best RPGs embrace a rich storytelling tradition as well as deep and engaging gameplay to create universes that are as exciting to explore as they are thrilling to quest and do battle in. And we’ve sunk hundreds — sometimes even thousands — of hours immersing ourselves in those incredible universes, whether that be stunning high fantasy kingdoms full of knights and dragons, exciting sci-fi realms brimming with possibilities, or even extraordinary versions of our own world.
But which RPGs are the best of the best? Which RPGs were influential enough to lead the rest, or bold enough to question the mold in new and exciting ways? Which RPGs gave us the richest characters, worlds, and stories — experiences we’ll never forget? IGN got its biggest RPG fans in a room to find out. Below are the Top 100 RPGs of All Time.
The main elements we examined:
Story (Is it compelling, well-written, or uniquely told?)
Presentation (Is its sound, music, and/or visual style particularly strong?)
Character progression (Is there satisfying decision-making when it comes to building a character, choosing a combat style, or making other decisions in the game world?)
Combat (Is it fun? Innovative? Does it ask the player to make interesting choices?)
Systems (Is there an interesting dynamic between its various meta systems?)
Because the RPG is a particularly diverse and hard-to-define genre, it was important for us to nail down exactly what qualifies as an “RPG.”
For the purposes of this list, we defined an RPG as a game that includes:
Persistent character progression (including player-exposed stats)
Combat that is a significant part of the experience
Choices and consequences
Story
Exploration
Character building and customization
Throughout gaming history perhaps no genre has evolved quite as much as the RPG. And while those classic role-playing games of the 16 and 32 bit eras are no doubt some of the greatest games of all time, we’ve come a long way since then. So with that said, here are the top 10 best modern RPGs of all time.
But before we get into the list, let’s set some ground rules.
First, for the purpose of this feature, we’re defining “modern” as any game released within the past 10 to 15 years – basically since the start of the PS3 and Xbox 360 era of consoles.
Second, because RPG is such a broad genre, we did our best to try and keep this list to games that are purely – or, at least, mostly pure –RPGs; that is, games with a heavy focus on decision-making and story elements coupled with statistical progression. Meaning, if a game could be better described as being a genre other than RPG, we left it off the list – that’s why you won’t see games like X-Com or Fire Emblem, which are better described as tactics games, or any of the FromSoftware Soulsborne games, because… well… yeah, they’re basically their own genre at this point. |
