Miyazaki grew up "tremendously poor" while living in the city of Shizuoka, Japan, stating that he had no life ambitions as a child.[1] Despite that, he was a heavy reader, but as his parents could not afford to buy him books or manga, he had to borrow from his local library.[1] The books he read at the time, many in English, were sometimes beyond his reading capabilities, with parts he could not fully understand.

After some cajoling, Miyazaki reveals that he grew up “tremendously poor” in the city of Shizuoka, 100 miles south-west of Tokyo. His office-worker parents couldn’t afford books or manga, so he had to borrow whatever he could find in the library. That’s why he ended up with works beyond his reading capabilities. “I found so much joy in those stories,” he says, seated in his Tokyo studio, having granted the Guardian a rare interview. “It was a rich reading experience, even if I wasn’t always reading.”

Miyazaki spent much of his childhood in libraries, reading and absorbing literature - some of it in English - like a sponge soaking up water. Just as a sponge is ignorant of water's composition, so did Miyazaki read many passages he simply could not understand because of the language barrier.

When I was a kid, I truly enjoyed reading books that were a little advanced for me, where I could only understand half the Kanji and had to use my imagination to fill in the gaps.
