Why OnePlus 3x zoom advertised isn't wrong
Photographer here, I have read and saw many people are unhappy with OnePlus 'false advertising'. I'm here to tell you why it's not.
DSLR camera have sensor size; 35mm Full frame, and a crop of that in 1.6x factor called APS-C. You can use your 50mm Full frame lenses on your APS-C and the crop factor will make it a FOCAL length equivalent of 80mm. This 80mm give your a more zoomed in FOV, or field of view.
Many fullframe DSLR have the option to have this crop in their setting. And lots of professional sport photographer will use their fullframe lens on a crop sensor body for the zoomed in FOV, because telephoto lenses are big and heavy.
This is basically what OnePlus is doing, giving you a larger sensor with a 50mm lens, they crop it down to an 80mm lens by changing the sensor. Cropping the large sensor does reduce the pixel so they said 8Mp, which is not wrong.
Being a photographer, I understand this concept clearly and I'm glad that they put a larger sensor on there as oppose to using a small sensor with meaningless amount of pixel, more pixel isn't a good thing!!
Any other photographer out there have a different take on this? Don't leave it to clueless news site shaping your opinion.

Link to describe how zoom calculation work. Oneplus widest angle is 17mm and telephoto is 55 mm. so 55/17= approximately 3x zoom. Not misleading, PR department just doesn't have the same photography knowledge as the engineer. While the cropped in 8MP image is around 86mm equivalent, they could have just easily advertise 86/17= 5x zoom!!
Sensor cropping is beneficial in a way that it only use the center of the lens, resulting in a sharper image and less blur/dark corners. I think this is why OnePlus use the full sensor for portrait, in portrait mode it blur out the background anyways so sharpness does not matter.

应该不会起诉,虽然我也没看懂讲的啥,反正也提到焦距了。。。 |
