I met the DarliFra creative team at Crunchyroll Expo!! by thecrazycyborggirl
The last question of the Q&A was just that! Nishigori-sensei essentially said:
1) You guys ask for a season 2 way too fast
and
2) My head is kind of muddled and tired, not clear. Please ask again about a season 2 when my head is clear!
Q: What are the quintessential parts of a mecha anime aside from the actual mechas?
A: There really are no key elements to a mecha anime; for DitF specifically, we wanted to include the concept of a pseudo-family and futuristic sci-fi dystopia.
Q: Why did you decide to change 02’s hair color from black to pink?
A: Initially her character was supposed to be more like a ghost; she was supposed to be supernatural and quiet, the complete opposite of 02 today. However, once we started working on the story, with how Hiro’s character is, we knew that that character interaction couldn’t really work, so we decided, hey why not do a complete 180 of her character, and that’s how we got the 02 we know today.
Q: How did you settle on the design of 02?
A: We wanted her to stand out. We wanted people to be able to look at her and think: “Oh that’s Darling in the FranXX.” So we gave her pink hair, big boobs, and (I don’t remember, sorry. I think it was green eyes?) so that she could stand out from the others. Notice how all the other characters have very human, normal colored hair. We also gave her the jacket and cap because we wanted to show how while she may seem mysterious, she has a big heart inside. So we had her wear the jacket without the sleeves like how a lot of Japanese men will, and tried to portray her as this badass woman.
(About 02’s height and initial designs, forgot the question): A: When I first sketched out 02, I had her as a short girl, but Nishigori-sensei said “No no no!” insisted that she be tall. I really liked the short cute girl design, so when we remembered “There’s also the character of 01 we have to design”, we used the concept of the short girl for her instead.
Q: Were there any times you guys disagreed about a particular design? If so, please tell.
A: Nishigori-sensei and I (Tanaka-sensei) fought over whether or not Ichigo should have the bangs on the left side of her face cover her eye or not. (I don’t remember the context, but insert Nishigori going “I WANT BANGS I WANT BANGS I WANT BANGS” or something along the lines of that.)
Q: Did you come up with child 02 before or after you finalized teen 02? (this question wasn’t really answered but)
A: With Child 02, I (Tanaka-sensei) didn’t really know how I wanted to tackle her. Should she be cute? or creepy? (Someone in the audience yells “Kawaii!” Everyone starts laughing.) (In English:) Ah Thank you, Thank you!
Q: A lot of anime usually change the opening, whether it be the animation or the actual song, but Darling in the FranXX doesn’t really do that. Why did you decide to keep the opening the same, but only change a few things here and there?
A: Well for one, the song was really good. (Audience laughs.) We wanted to keep it because it was so recognizable as being the song from DitF. A lot of anime change openings from season one to two, and that recognition gets lost and is no longer the same. We really liked the opening and wanted people to associate it with DitF, so that’s why it stayed relatively the same.
Q: How did you come about the action/fighting scenes against the Klaxosaurs?
A: (insert name of person, a director at Gainax I think?) was our Head of Action Animation and he had a particularly strong influence on the fight scenes with episode 1 & 6. That’s why the scenes had such a strong Gainax feel to them.
Q: How did the final uniform design get chosen?
A: We had an incredibly hard time choosing the uniforms and constantly argued over which one to use for the final cut. (Lots of different colors and designs on the screen.) We wanted to have a school uniform based on a (insert type of European wear? idk the name) school uniform, with the shorts and socks. We ended up with our final design because we liked the sci-fi with the X-chromosome Y-chromosome neck ties as they really reflected their situation.
Q: (this was asked after the panel ended and most people left) At the end of DitF, Hiro and 02 are shown reincarnated but never get the happy ending that they wanted. Why did you decide to end it like that?
A: We really felt that that was the only way for 02 to find happiness, to be happy. (essentially they can be together without living in a world full of the stressors they had, giving them a clean slate)
Q: (I tbh don’t remember, but I think it was a follow up to their answer about zero two and Hiro’s character interaction)
A: You guys know Doraemon right? (Audience: Yeah) Well in Doraemon, there’s this kid who goes on all these adventures with Doraemon, but no one ever remembers him, they only ever remember Doraemon. That’s what we wanted with 02 and Hiro. Everyone knows 02 but most don’t know Hiro. (Host: So does that mean that 02 is a time traveling cat with inventions from the future?) You could say that. (Everyone Laughs)
Q: (More on the road to 02’s final design)
A: (On screen: 02 with multiple hair styles, some scraggy like that of Ryuko Matoi/Yoko Littner’s, some with wisps and curls, all long hair styles.) We decided our heroine needed straight hair after all. We wanted her to be a fighter, to be cool. (There’s a lace like head wrap shown that goes around the side and back of her head to hold her horns instead of the final headband that we have now.)
Q: How did you come about the designs of the FranXX?
A: (Tanaka-sensei) The design of the FranXX were one of the first things we started working on. I think DitF is unique in that the FranXX all have very soft figures/silhouettes as compared to most mecha anime’s hard lines.
Q: Your staff is incredibly star-studded with some very talented animators. How did you guys work together to decide on the final product?
A: We held contests to choose our designs. (Host: were there winners?) (Chuckles) There were, but I prefer not to get into it and say.
Q: (More on how they worked together to finalize designs)
A: (Nishigori-sensei) I myself am a character designer, so I definitely had an influence on designs. (Pictures of the domes on screen) The domes were all my design and stayed relatively same from start to finish.
Q: How has it been with the reception of seeing DitF not only being successful in Japan, but also in the West?
A: I (Nishigori) was pleasantly surprised to see how popular DitF was in the West. (I think it was Fukushima who said this) I got a twitter recently, and half way through the series, all of a sudden my twitter blew up. I couldn’t sleep at night because of all the notifications, so please, save your passion until a little bit after today. (Host: You know there’s a mute button right?) (Cue awkward silence from everyone)
Q: It’s very clear how much everyone loves 02 with all the cosplays we’ve seen today. What do you think about all the cosplay from this show?
A: When we designed the characters, we wanted people to see them and want to cosplay them. We wanted to provide interesting and unique designs.
Nishigori talks about one of the things he asked Tanaka to change was the distance between the pistils and stamens because he felt they were originally far too close to each other. (think butt to groin-ish)
Also, just wanted to note that one of the concept designs of 02 featured her in the white plugsuit but with pink stripes instead of red ones like in the final vers. |
