Suikoden III emerged as one of the biggest, best surprises of the PlayStation 2 fall lineup, giving role-playing fans starving for a suitably outstanding follow-up to last year\'s Final Fantasy X something to really sink their teeth into. While Suikoden III doesn\'t have quite the same broad appeal as last year\'s best PS2 role-playing game, it does have a long, involved quest, a great story, and tremendous depth, making it the obvious choice for this category. Even amid competition from higher-profile games like Kingdom Hearts, Suikoden III still stands tall, and it\'s one of the most advanced, most polished examples of console role-playing to date.
The narrative of Suikoden III unfolds from three different perspectives, giving the player a unique and epic view of a conflict taking place in an original, intriguing fantasy world. Yet the three main protagonists are only a small part of the huge cast of characters available--in fact, 108 playable characters are featured in the game, and each has his or her own unique skills, personality, and motivations.
Suikoden III is a conventional role-playing game in some ways, with the sorts of random battles and plot elements that are fairly typical of the genre. Yet fans of this style of gaming know full well that what separates the best role-playing games from the rest lies in the execution, the storytelling, and the sense of style, and it\'s in these crucial respects that Suikoden III excels. Fans of console role-playing would be doing themselves a great favor by checking this game out.
