José was a Hail Mary. You can't actually blame their thinking on this. The thesis was that we had a squad and club ready to take the final step and that Kane/Son had had enough of more long term plans and future dreams. It was time to push over the line however we could and he was unemployed and the man who would be able to do that. I get it.
Levy was also always a fan of his and particularly blown away by the self deprecating nature of his job interview where he listed all of his own faults and detailed what he had learned during his time out. He was unemployed ,available and seemingly a changed man. Hungry, humbled and ready to unleash José 2.0 on the world. A very attractive proposition.The A Lister to placate the players, to star in the Amazon documentary and to push the club forward commercially which is so important to them (All or Nothing show and Bale & Alex Morgan signings evidence of how important this next phase is to the business plan).José was seen as Box Office which he was, at least at the beginning.
His year out of the game had dulled the memories of the washed up wreck who left Stamford Bridge and Old Trafford being chased by pitchforks. The players were in awe of him and his early interactions with the ball boy and in making decisive first half changes added to the mystique. The José 2.0 narrative was alive and well as The Humble One began his reign.
Unfortunately José was benefitting from adding his touches to the Pochettino core which gave a nice balance, As time went on, I think two things happened. Firstly, while a little José may be good, lots of José is not good. Certainly not for Tottenham. Secondly, José is not a new man. We can't fault him for being himself and he has had a glittering career as a manager. But in the twilight of his powers and at the first club since Porto where he cannot outspend all opponents , José is laid bare as what he undoubtedly is : a supreme narcissist who manages players primarily by virtue his (now hugely diminished) aura. A manager whose tactics, techniques and methods both on and off the pitch have been superseded by those of younger coaches. This is the cycle of time in football and one that few are able to accept gracefully, let alone the Once Special One.
He was never a good cultural fit for Tottenham and many Spurs fans have been on a journey of self- discovery this season. Is the Game about Glory? Some of us were ringing the alarm bells even when we were top of the league having defeated Man City and Arsenal - the latter match where our 2-0 half time lead was followed by the utterly embarrassing lack of desire to leave our own half during the second period. This was not the way we wanted to win anything. It lacked soul. It jarred so badly with the ethos of the club. It was the ultimate in cognitive dissonance for me.
If results are the only thing that matters then the second you don't get results, you have nothing that matters...
Tottenham finally got the template right with Mauricio Pochettino - brilliant and driven young coach playing exciting, attacking, progressive football that could easily have won the league twice and the champions league with more luck and most importantly more backing from upstairs. Oh how a Grealish or a Fernandes would have changed history.
